The Burns Brothers Company, a creator of custom monuments in Jersey City, NJ, normally operated one 60hp air compressor to satisfy the entire plant demand, which at times, exceeded its capacity. “Our compressor had failed and we set out on a fairly extensive search for new equipment. Airmatic, against all others, came across with the information we needed and they backed up what they said,” says John Burns, Owner/Operator of Burns Brothers.
When deciding to purchase new equipment, it is always necessary to understand and quantify the air usages in plant applications over various conditions. Burns Brothers, a creator of custom headstones, requires extensive air for intermittent sand blasting. During low plant demand, their 60 hp Sullair compressor would continue to operate very inefficiently, causing excessively high energy consumption. "This equates to an unnecessarily high electric bill", Burns explains, "My monthly bill was $1500 or greater. Since the installation of the Atlas Copco GA50-VSD, my monthly electric bill has been reduced to $800-$900."
In this application, a Variable Speed Compressor was recommended to suit their requirements. The concept of the VSD is to drive down electrical usage over a broad spectrum of plant load requirements. By increasing the efficiency of the compressor, Burns Brothers three main goals were achieved. The ability to lower their production operating costs, reduce costs associated with maintenance, and increase manufacturing productivity. Burns called Airmatic to determine the air usage under all operating conditions and together, they worked towards the best solution for his operation.
