MBox Excites Customers to Drive Down Cost
“Taking energy costs associated with production and converting it to profits in the bottom line”

SPACE “With quick response, and hands on evaluation, Airmatic gave us numbers and hard facts and provided results to back them up,” stated Manesh Oratz, Owner and Operator of Allied Extruders, Long Island City, NY.

Atlas Copco’s Measurement Box (aka MBox) was developed to provide a better understanding of the inefficiencies associated with compressed air generation. The MBox records the compressor status, i.e. Load/Unload and Off, over the entire week of plant operation and will then formulate the total amount of kW being used. The goal is to efficiently match your supply side to your demand side, making your operation more profitable. Mr. Oratz was impressed with Airmatic’s innovative technology and the timely manor in which the generated report from the MBox was presented. Oratz’s goal was to reduce total operating costs within his acceptable Return on Investment, as well as stabilizing the air requirements in his plant.

Initially Mr. Oratz wanted to replace his Quincy 250 hp natural gas driven rotary compressor, which was extremely inefficient and a maintainence nightmare. The MBox report showed how the installation of a Variable Speed Compressor would provide Allied Extruders with a logical and efficient solution to meet his goals. An Atlas Copco GA90-VSD was installed and replaced the existing Quincy 250hp, along with two Sullair 50 hp, and one LeRoi 25 hp compressors. The new Atlas Copco now matches all plant load requirements, significantly reducing overall operating costs while allowing for increased plant productivity.

Energy costs at Allied Extruders were significantly decreased, as were the nuisance problems of the original system. Along with these savings, Allied Extruders started a relationship with Airmatic, one that was founded on proven technology, a well planned solution and basic hard work. Using their blended kWh electrical rate in 2003, the annual cost to compress air at the facility was $70,657. Allied's willingness to perform this study on their compressed air system, provided a solution which reduced 2004 electrical operating costs by 38%.
